Mei Zhan Jin Jun Mei is a rare and elegant Wuyi Mountain black tea, originating from the mountainous region of Feng Shui Guan. The tea is made from the Mei Zhan cultivar, using the freshest spring buds, meticulously hand-processed. This batch combines the delicate, bud-like sweetness of Jin Jun Mei with the floral, vibrant, and clean character of the Mei Zhan cultivar.

Jin Jun Mei is one of the noblest styles of Chinese black teas: it is made from tiny, early spring buds, which makes the cup naturally sweet, silky, and rich in aroma. However, in this tea, the special character of the Mei Zhan cultivar is also strongly present. Mei Zhan is more known from the world of Wuyi oolongs, but as a black tea, it shows a fresher, more floral, and lighter side.

Feng Shui Guan – a pristine mountain environment in Wuyishan

Feng Shui Guan is among the higher, pristine mountain areas of Wuyishan. The misty peaks, clear water, rich vegetation, and cooler mountain microclimate all contribute to this tea having a bright, fresh, yet deeply sweet character.

This is not a heavy, malty, or smoky black tea. It is much more elegant, fragrant, and clean. In the cup, a rich florality, soft honeyed notes, delicate fruitiness, and a crystalline, rock candy-like sweetness emerge. The sip is silky, well-defined, refreshing, and the finish is long, clean, and delicately perfumed.

What makes it special?

The tea is made exclusively from early spring buds, which makes it rarer and gives it a finer character. Due to hand-rolling, the shape of the leaves is not completely uniform – this is precisely what shows the living, human character of artisanal processing. The result is a Jin Jun Mei that simultaneously carries the depth of Wuyishan black teas and the floral elegance of the Mei Zhan cultivar.

Mei Zhan Jin Jun Mei is for those who seek not primarily strength in black tea, but rather purity, fragrance, and delicate layers. It is an easy-drinking yet exceptionally refined tea: beautiful in the first cup, but truly reveals itself when observed through multiple short infusions.

Flavor Profile

  • Character: elegant, floral, clean, naturally sweet
  • Aroma: dense florality, honey, ripe fruit, fresh mountain air
  • Taste: rock candy, soft honeyed notes, light fruitiness, delicate floral tones
  • Texture: silky, smooth, clean, and light
  • Finish: long, sweet, fresh, subtly perfumed
  • Tea color: clear, vibrant golden-red infusion

Who do we recommend it to?

We recommend it to those who appreciate special Chinese black teas but are not looking for a heavy, smoky, or strongly malty character. This tea is much more delicate, bright, and fragrant: an elegant, mountain black tea that approaches from the perspective of honeyed sweetness and florality.

It is also beginner-friendly because it is not bitter or harshly astringent, and exciting for experienced tea drinkers because the Mei Zhan cultivar reveals its unique face in the Jin Jun Mei style. It is a particularly beautiful choice for slow mornings, afternoon quiet times, or mindful gongfu tea ceremonies.

Preparation Suggestion

Asian preparation / Gongfu

  • Amount of tea: 3.5–4 g / 100–110 ml
  • Water temperature: 85–90 °C
  • First infusion: 10–15 seconds
  • Subsequent infusions: gradually extended
  • Number of infusions: approx. 6–8

Western preparation

  • Amount of tea: 3–4 g / 250 ml
  • Water temperature: approx. 90 °C
  • Steeping time: 3–4 minutes
  • Re-steeping: 2–3 times, with slightly longer times

Fine-tuning

If you want to emphasize the tea's more floral, lighter side, use water around 85 °C and shorter infusions. If you are looking for deeper sweetness, a fuller body, and a longer rock candy-like finish, raise the water temperature closer to 90 °C.

Teavolution tip: In a porcelain gaiwan, it particularly beautifully showcases its clean, floral character. In a glass teapot, the sight of the light, golden-red infusion is also part of the experience.
