Black Cut Wood-fired Chawan – Ceramics by Ági Nagy-György
Made in Hungary, by the hands of ceramic artist Ági Nagy-György. A unique matcha tea bowl where the naturalness of artisan ceramics and a more defined, contemporary form beautifully converge.
The surface and character of the chawan were ultimately shaped by wood-firing. In the kiln, the movement of flame, ash, and heat leaves its mark on the clay, making each piece slightly different: more vibrant, deeper, and more inimitable than a mass-produced item.
The black tone and cut form give this bowl a more powerful presence. The vibrant green color of matcha is particularly beautifully highlighted within it: the dark ceramic seems to frame the tea, emphasizing its freshness, foam, and deep green glow.
The chawan's diameter ranges between 12-13 cm; each piece is unique.
What tea do we recommend it for?
We primarily recommend it for matcha preparation. The chawan's shape is suitable for preparation with a bamboo whisk (chasen), while also feeling stable, natural, and personal when held in hand. It particularly complements premium, umami-rich Japanese matchas.
Why is it special?
- Made in Hungary, artisan ceramics
- Unique work by Ági Nagy-György
- Fired in a wood-fired kiln
- Characterful black, cut form
- Ideal for matcha preparation and serving
- Each piece is unique, with a surface shaped by fire
Use and care
Before use, it is advisable to preheat the chawan with warm water. After preparing the tea, rinse it with lukewarm water, then allow it to dry completely. As artisan ceramics, we recommend hand cleaning; treat it more slowly and carefully instead of using a dishwasher.
Personal contact
Our teas don't come from wholesale warehouses or unknown sources. We travel to the small producers we source from – whether it's a Japanese family tea garden, a Chinese mountain village or an oolong maker in Taiwan.
Stories
We meet them in person, learn their story, see how they care for their plants, and how they process the fresh leaves.
These experiences are the soul of our teas. This way, not only is the quality guaranteed, but also the fact that behind each cup there is a real person, a real story.
Direct
This direct relationship is valuable to us. Not only because of the excellent tea, but because we believe that trust, respect and personal presence are what make the tea drinking experience truly special.
