Japanese clay pot from Tokoname – 230 ml (ushirode kyusu)

Handcrafted, unglazed clay jug from the Tokoname region of Japan. The rear handle (ushirode) design provides a comfortable grip and a secure, controlled pour. With its 230 ml capacity, it is ideal for tea drinking for 1-3 people, both for everyday use and for tastings.

Form and origin

  • Ushirode kyusu: the tongs are located on the “back” of the can.
  • Yokode kyusu: the Japanese form with side handles, which is mainly used for finely rolled green teas.
  • The current piece combines the traditional design of Tokoname craftsmanship with everyday usability.

What teas do we recommend?

Universal teapot – can be used for practically any type of tea. Works especially well with :

  • for oolongs (baked and greener styles)
  • for white teas
  • for red (black) teas
  • but can also be used for Japanese green teas, depending on taste and custom

Design details

  • Unglazed clay – natural, silky-touch surface.
  • Fine clay filter in front of the spout: with small holes for a clean pour.
  • Precise spout – controlled, drip-free pouring.

Usage – quick guide

  1. Preheating: rinse with hot water, then pour out.
  2. Dosage: guideline ratio ~ 1 g / 50–70 ml (can be adjusted to taste).
  3. Pouring: work at the appropriate temperature, using short, controlled pours.
  4. Pouring: Empty the can completely – for a consistent taste.

Handling and cleaning

  • After each brew, remove the tea leaves and let them dry completely.
  • Do not put the lid back on the can until it is dry .
  • Do not use dishwashing detergent ; tea stains on the outside can be gently wiped off with baking soda and water . Do not scrub the inside.
  • Filter cleaning: if a leaf gets stuck in the perforation, let water flow backwards through the spout – this usually solves the problem.
  • No dishwasher , no dryer; avoid sudden heat shock .
  • Since it is unglazed , it is worth dedicating it to a type of tea (e.g. oolong / white / red) for flavor fidelity.

  • Capacity: 230 ml
  • Recommended number of people: 1–3 people
  • Material: unglazed clay ceramic
  • Origin: Tokoname, Japan

Note: This is a handcrafted product; there may be natural, individual variations in shade, weight and fine details.
